What is alcoholism and drug addiction?

The scientific world cannot give a simple answer. Some scientists assert that addiction is a pathology of behavior, a very harmful habit; others assert that it is an incurable disease and addicts' destiny is to pay for a drug and alcohol by their lives. There is no other problem in the world causing so many contradictions. Some physicians change heroin to methadon for the patients with drug addiction ("there is no problem - the problem does not exist"), others, by using current methods of dependence withdrawal followed by blocking opioid receptors, try to give the patients some time to mature and manage with non-acceptance of the world which hurts them: by injustice (parents changed the course of events in their life abruptly without their consent), cynicism, money grubbing, deficiency of kindness and attention ("it was necessary to work much, so as to make the best for children"), the mistrust resulting in the state of "taught helplessness" ("we know better what you should..."), which entails fading of searching activity (the possibility to find an exit from any situation given by God).

The attitude to the problems of drug addiction and alcoholism, both in the scientific and practical narcology, up to now has been based on the governmental position: either adopting this problem (the narcological institutes try to find the biochemical mechanisms initiating creation of physical drug dependence in the body) or leaving the problem ("you want a drug and alcohol, so you will get methadon and enormous industry of drink industry").

But today there is a practical narcology and physicians with decades of continuous work with pain, with senseless death in the young age simply from a habit which can be changed and needed to be changed. What can we say in reply to a mother with her mute question in eyes - "Is it possible to save? ". How is it possible to make mother not to see the eyes of her sons or daughters that are blind from heroin or methadone, or alcohol? How to answer the mother's question without hurting her: "Why did I try so much, and they do not want to live or cannot live? " Who can remain indifferent to that?

The narcological clinic which I wrote about deals with the problems of addictology for a long time, and the leading physician, in spite of social, political or psychological complications, continues treating both the wounds and souls of the patients for 30 years.

The physician's experience proves undeniably that this blindness is a situational one, it is forced, but not doomed.
